The Astrology of Big L.

I wouldn't be a true Harlem girl if I didn't represent Harlem's own Lamont Coleman, also known as Big L. L was one of hip-hops most vibrant storytellers and his chart is literally overflowing with creativity and artistic vision.

Born May 30th, 1974, in Harlem, New York, L's dominant element is air. This isn't surprising since astrologically air is associated with mental perception and expression. L's Sun was in mercurial Gemini (ruled by Mercury) trine Pluto in Libra. He literally lived in his mind and words/communication were very much linked to his life force (Sun) Pluto/Sun aspects give one a magnetism that cannot be ignored and a strong desire to delve into deeper dimensions of darkness. L's track "Devil's Son" is a prime example of the dark, gritty, plutonian energy that could be felt in some of his music.
Two things jumped out at me when I looked at his chart: His Mercury in sensitive/moody Cancer square Pluto, conjunct Saturn, and sextile his Venus in fiery Aries. His Mercury in Cancer hugely influenced his lyrical expression in terms of his feelings and emotions being strongly tied to the way he spoke, not just lyrically, but in everyday life. Cancer rarely forgets anything, so any slight was probably taken personally. The square to Pluto may have made him obsessive when it came to ideas as well. Once he got a hold of a thought, it probably consumed him. Being a lyricist definitely had healing qualities for him and assisted in self-analysis.

His Mercury is conjunct Saturn in Cancer. Mercury/Saturn aspects can express themselves in various ways, yet with the conjunction, the energy is blended perfectly. L's harmonizing Mercury/Saturn aspect gave him an excellent sense of verbal and intellectual order and a disciplined lyrical approach.
L's chart is dominated by squares (inner tension). Individuals with heavily squared charts are often the astrological version of the little engine that could. Squares can make us work harder at our craft and give us insight into what needs to be released. Hip-Hop definitely created somewhat of a buffer between some of his internal struggles in his young life.
I'm going to expand on his chart, later on, this week; including his transits during his untimely death at the age of 24. Travel safely L!!!
